As you may have figured out, we like to go out and about, near and far, to experience the new, the old, the strange, the whatever. Last night, Cutest and I discovered, right here in River City, The Fish Fry Holiday Party … with The Funky Butt Brass Band. Now that’s a mouth full, no… earful as Funky Butt can really lay down some New Orleans jazz takes on traditional Christmas tunes. They have an eclectic sound, to put it happily.
This not always annual troop of traveling musicians came to the Knuckleheads Saloon at 2715 Rochester Avenue, K.C. to help support local FM radio station KCUR's efforts to remain on the air as a NPR broadcaster.
Although a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area, I had never entered the doors of Knuckleheads, open since 2001. Merle Haggard to Judy Collins have performed here, joining a long list of big names to unknowns who have entertained there. Cutest and I arrived early to sample the jazz band playing on the smaller stage across the street from the garage. Promptly at 7, the doors for tonight’s gig opened.
The cavernous “garage” stage and bar (opened in 2015) was soon packed, and the Funky Butt Brass Band did not disappoint. From traditional Christmas noels, with a twist, to some electric guitar vs. electronic keyboard duels, this band lived up to its name. All of the musicians were A+ caliber, especially the trumpeter and the keyboardist thought I. Supporting them were a trombonist, a bass guitarist, a drummer and a cool looking dude who played a mean sousaphone.
So don’t overlook this iconic saloon which sits next door to J. Reiger Company's brick distillery and entertainment building. Knuckleheads' performing acts are often and varied . . you can get an earful while sipping on your favorite beverage.
