A (Not So) Spooky Ride

The other day we saw an article about an Overland Park man who was displaying nearly 400 carved pumpkins in his yard. It got us thinking how much we miss outdoor holiday celebratory decorating. As we live in a condo, opportunities to view those displays around our neighborhood are more limited. So, we decided to take a little tour one evening and see what creative people out there are doing.
We began at 124th Terrace and Nieman. The creator, Daniel Taber aka “Dan the Pumpkin Man,” continues a tradition he started when his son was born in 2011. At his gigantic pumpkin display beside his house you are invited to use a QR code and donate money to Harvesters, which is a lovely idea.
No one matched Dan's huge collection of pumpkins in their yards, but we enjoyed others' artful displays as well.
Some people like a mish-mash and some are very tidy and planned.
Friends gave us a couple of suggestions as to where to look, so we hit those as we wandered. We noted some trends. Skeletons are big this year. And some are very big!
Light shows are becoming more prominent and we like people putting up lights for Halloween. I’m of the opinion every house should have yard lights on year round, only changing them for the seasons. Purists point out they wouldn’t be noticeable or celebratory if you did that, but homes look sooo cheery and welcoming when they have outdoor seasonal lights. Even if they're ghostly.
Sidebar because I can't resist: Speaking of light, be sure to catch the spectacular display at Liberty Memorial, weekends until November 9. It's worth the trip!
Now back to Halloween: some people are into whimsy which was also entertaining.
We saw many more than we have room or you have patience for. The main point to all of this is that you should get out there, drive some different routes and see what your neighbors are doing. Maybe even drive a few extra miles, aimlessly. You’ll probably find many more than we did –- but as you can see, below, Happy Hour was calling our name.
