Battle of the S's: Snow vs. Sand

Cutest and I recently returned from Puerto Rico, U.S.A.'s 51st want-to-be state. (Actually the island’s population is about evenly divided on that subject.)

Moving on. We enjoyed escaping the cold, gray and near lifeless landscape of KC for a month. Unfortunately we came home too soon.

As I sit in our office trying to keep my fingers warm enough to type this blog on my iPad, snow swirls outside my window which struggles to keep the 0o air temperature on the other side. All this does is reignite the debate, is sand better than snow?

There is no doubt in my mind that sand is the undefeated champion. Do not rebuke my choice by saying sand can be found in freezing climates, accompanied by dank, windy surroundings. True - but my unofficial survey states that the average man or woman on the street links sand to sunny, shell-flung beaches where bikini wearers flip flop along, accessorized by sunglasses and fluffy, pastel colored beach towels.

Sand lets your toes enjoy freedom, yet in snow they are captive in itchy, woolen socks which are then encased in dark, heavy boots. Snow requires so many layers of protective clothing you start to resemble brother Randy in his immoveable snowsuit in the movie Christmas Story. Thick scarves replace soft beach towels. Fur-lined WWI fighter-pilot-like headgear sits atop your noggin and covers your ears. While strolling a beach, only a light-weight Panama hat is the chapeau of necessity.

After plodding through snow, your body demands hot liquids be administered in an attempt to thaw out frozen inner organs. Not so when ambling over stretches of sun baked sand. Here a frost covered bottle of a local beer or tall icy cocktail glass, perhaps topped with a pink umbrella or cherry, brightens the mood.

The beauty life span of snow is about 24 hours. After that, mud, salt, tire tracks, pollution, and unhindered dogs turn that once Disney-like sparkling surface into ash residue dumped from a coal mine. Sand, thanks to twice daily tides, self cleans away crumbled sand castles, foot prints and other surface blemishes.

For Cutest and me, sand wins in a landslide, or rather, sandslide. Our beach gear remains ready to go as March will find us enjoying the Key West environs once trod upon by Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Jimmy Buffett. Until then, I must go get another cup of hot coffee; my fingers are locking up.

Stay warm, loyal readers.

P.S. Note from the editor (Cutest): The latest upgrade, not that I asked for it, just showed up on my email on which Cute’s blog was written, and had this oh-so-helpful information below:

AI Overview

  • Cute initiated a blog post arguing that sand is superior to snow based on a recent trip to Puerto Rico.

  • Cute detailed several points favoring sand, including clothing requirements, the need for hot drinks after snow, and snow's short lifespan.

  • Cute concluded that he and Cutest are preparing for a trip to Key West in March.

I’m wondering if we should just have AI write the blog??  Also I note it came in Roboto font. Creepy.
