Better Than Sex???

A quick disclaimer for the following blog. This will not be X-rated. However, the headline may bear some truth.

On Truman Avenue, the main north/south roadway in Key West, on a prominent corner stands a dark maroon one story building with very dark windows and with a sign over its entrance proclaiming “BETTER THAN SEX.”  

Now that caught Cutest’s and my attention. As dutiful investigative bloggers and knowing that our faithful readers would want to know more, we whipped our speedy golf cart into the nearest parking spot and walked over to the entrance.

There's a sign attached beside the doorway which spelled out what to expect should you dare enter. One declaration stated that walls or curtains would aid in assuring privacy at each table. No more than four per table, helping to maintain an intimate atmosphere. Also no kiddos, adults only!  These guys aren’t messing around. And lastly patrons are warned to use their “speakeasy” voice, like you’re seated next to big Al and you’re planning the next caper. Cutest and I looked at each other and said in unison “Let’s go!”

Inside our eyes gradually adjusted to the dimly lit interior, adding to the feeling of mystery. Our hostess, dressed in a slinky satin gown, led us to our table. Chandeliers from the ‘20s cast a dull light from the copper clad ceiling from which they hung. Semi-erotic photos and paintings graced walls or the sides of booths. Sorry ladies, no Chippendales in sight.

Soon after we were seated, our waiter appeared and began to explain our sexual options for the evening.

Ok, now for the rest of the story:  As you may have already figured out, BETTER THAN SEX is a dessert and custom cocktail restaurant opened back in 2009 by an enterprising couple who fell in love with Key West and had a sweet tooth.

The menu offers custom coffees, cocktails and desserts. Many, many choices are found in each category. Hot and Bothered coffees, Love Potions or Sexpresso-Tinis, and of course Caress my Carrot or Blueberry Birthday Suit are but just a few of the offerings.

Cutest and I drank, ate and laughed through our short stay, finding each item we decided on to be extremely tasty. Did it live up to its billing?  Won’t say.

This picture and part of their over-the-top description are from their website: "This ethereally light and creamy tiramisu sneaks up from behind with perks of zesty lime that make you want to pucker ever so slightly. Sheets of creamy mousse, sultry sponge cake and a squeeze of key lime curd create this master piece of ……! (Key Lime Tiramisu …. what were you thinking :) Crisp lime meringue cookies nestled alongside are preferred for a quick pick me up, bursting with a key lime coulis that gushes when you bite just right.

But, should you have the good fortune to visit Key West, be sure to include the restaurant BETTER THAN SEX on your to-do list. Is the restaurant’s name as claimed? That’s for you and your besty to decide.
