Christmas Reflections

TheBetterHalf

“The Season” is in full force, as you know. If you are a Christmas partaker, many events, experiences, money-sucking escapades await your attention ever day and night. A recent evening took Cute and me to Holiday Reflections at Union Station after stopping at Crown Center to get in the mood by listening to one of tens of choirs performing on the Grand Street level.

As an aside, Crown Center DOES have LOTS going on. Tomorrow, Tuesday the 5th at 12 PM is Tuba Christmas, an event I absolutely love. Tuba players from all over the city are dressed in crazy Christmas gear, as are their tubas. I first saw this event years ago when about 20 tubists congregated on the stairs at City Center Square. It remains a terrific hoot if the conductor doesn’t talk too long like last year. Check out https://www.crowncenter.com/events to see what else you can do this holiday season. If nothing else, it’s fun to people-watch.

Anyway, on to Union Station where I’m not sure we did much reflecting: Think lights, think competing cacophonies, think happy, screaming kids (honestly, not that loud or bad – sound dissipates in the 27,000 square feet of the Grand Hall) selfies and family pics. If you have kids or grandkids, it's the perfect environment - you can get an idea from the sterling slide show below.

The coolest thing for me was an admittedly hokey “sleigh” ride I took; Cute opted out of this excitement. I’ve never put on goggles and taken a virtual reality “ride." As close as I’ve come was years ago on a Disney World indoor roller coaster with sound and space effects. Here, for $6 for maybe three minutes, you fly. Cute did take a video of me which I’m not sharing of course, but when he forced me to watch it, I saw me bracing occasionally and moving my shoulders and jerking my neck during my flight. Such fun!

We’re including several other videos and if you want more info, go to https://unionstation.org/event/holiday-reflections/. It’s a fun hour – and then you can reward yourself with a drink at Pierpont’s – I celebrated my flying experience with a cos-mo-naut. Yes, good for you citron vodka, cranberry liqueur, blood orange liqueur, lime. Ho ho.

Despite this plethora of media, for sheer silliness and exurberance, you really should go. Check out the Lego exhibit while you're there. . .
