Cute and I don’t eat breakfast out that much, unless we’re travelling. Interrupt my morning ritual of coffee, newspapers, and healthy breakfast? (Usually a cookie.) Nope, tough to do.

But the other day’s errands were palpably improved by his suggestion of a not-so-early stop at Snooze in Westport, well-known for breakfast and brunch seven days a week where a boozy breakfast is also a possibility.
We didn’t take advantage of that last feature; day drinking when I have a lot to do is never a good idea for me. Well, seldom.

Snooze works hard on its 50s theme and it is very fun just to walk in and look at the place. Its booths are split – two ellipses facing each other and you can be served from either side. Such a smart idea. The décor is quirky and entertains all by itself. So it gets an A for atmosphere. Music is appropriate and not too loud.

But, as a former restaurant writer/critic, I was quickly reminded of how important service is to me. Especially because I have become hyper-aware of condescending attitudes that seem more prevalent as I’ve become older. This may be worse than being ignored because I’m more used to that. But at Snooze, we were served by a charming, friendly conscientious guy with dark brown eyes that truly sparkled. I wanted to take him home with me. Cute said no. Ok, then, I’d like to talk to his parents and congratulate them.
Good service can make up for a lot in my book. Coffee, most important, came quickly along with cream. I asked for my toast dark – but not the black that came back to me. J*** asked if it were too dark but I took it, thinking I could just do a bit of scraping (we didn’t waste food in my house) but it was already buttered, normally a good thing. Because he was always aware, when I easily caught his eye, he came over and replaced it. Though the eggs were not gooey enough for my over-medium taste, they tasted good and because I’d asked for two rather than the menued three (that food waste thing), we even got a couple bucks off, not that I’d asked.
Cute really liked his ham benny but it turns out he’s not a hash-brown fan. Who knew? Fortunately, it was still excellent the next day.
Snooze started in Denver and now has about 60 locations, including Westport and Overland Park. Though I'm usually not a chain-fan, I liked their focus on sustainability and they are proud of whom they hire. There’s an informative interview about the creators in Forbes from a few years back. It’s here, if you’re interested in the corporate side of it all.
Snooze was different enough to get us out of a breakfast rut. If you're in a similar situation, maybe try somewhere new and different. Don't snooze past Snooze.
P.S. Who really wants perfect pictures of perfect food? We've gone another direction.
