Not a surprise to their fans: The Back Alley Brass Band

 Sometimes the simple excursion can turn into the nicest experience.   Cutest here. I will cite two quick examples.

The first was on this past Saturday when we went to the Anita B. Gorman Nature Center on Troost because they were having their very popular plant sale. I didn’t look at the plant description too closely, but if I had, I would’ve noticed that it was mostly native plants and mostly by extension, great plants for outdoor yards. Alas, we lack a yard.

No matter. We walked through the Center out to the pathways. Within the confines of the Center’s space, there is a lovely little paved pathway with native plants everywhere.  We then found an entire little additional park, which we’d never seen before. Bigger than a pocket park, this park is adjacent to the Kauffman Foundation building and provides manicured walkways and pretty trees.  As many times as we’ve been to the lovely Kauffman gardens, we’ve never ventured across the parking lot to the east side to this park.  We thought it would be a nice place for a little picnic this summer.

The second surprise last week was in North Kansas City, where we discovered a bar with an attached room for small concerts, Rino (for River North).  Although there was extremely limited seating, we managed to snag a wall bench to hear the Back Alley Brass Band, with their New Orleans brass sound.  The band was great and the beer cold.  When we left, we realized we could have stayed outside and heard the music for free but the cover was cheap and certainly musicians deserve pay.  You can hear them in many locations, including May 1 at Buffalo State Pizza (midtown) and May 2 at the annual (?) The place was a little discovery and the band an even nicer one.  Maybe because it wasn’t really planned and we were happily surprised.  We all need these occasional little spontaneous excursions, doncha think?
