Whoopty Doo or Whoopty Meh: The Much Hyped 1587

Probably no new restaurant in town has been greeted with such fanfare, such PR, and such gosh I don’t know, anticipation, as 1587 at Lowe’s Hotel in downtown KC.  I say at because it is not actually in the hotel; you have to go outside where there are at least two “greeters“ to make sure that you are at the right place.

We were finally able to see and taste what the hype was all about due to a lovely and extravagant gift certificate from Cute’s kind daughter and son-in-law.

I won’t go into the snafued reservation, our fault, but we ended up seated at the bar, which was just fine with us for our early dinner.  Cool bar with attractive lighting.  We had a lovely and friendly server, Destiny, who did everything she could to make our meal more enjoyable.  The service was impeccable.

Pretty drinks, specialty drinks, expensive drinks, special effects made by lighting steel wool (bottom middle), orange peels shaped like footballs and very clear cubes embossed with 1587 of course.

I’m not going to give you a bite-by-bite or sip-by-sip review.  What I will say is that the drinks are creative, and expensive, and the meal that we had was excellent, although we did not go for the big time, and the really expensive wagyu steaks.  I also will say that I frequently order crabcakes and these were probably some of the best I’ve ever had.  Also expensive.

The ambience there is tasteful yet subdued.  No T-shirts or torn jeans. Definitely no TVs everywhere, in sight.  A wall will disappear in order to watch a Chiefs game, at which time you may wear that team's T-shirts and other paraphernalia, and you’ll ONLY see Chiefs’ games. That would be a fun time to go and sit in the bar.

The music last Wednesday night was provided by Lee Langston and his trio, who were wonderful.  His selections were excellent and he clearly was aware of his audience. If you need an entertainer, vocalist and more, I’d really recommend that you go to His Facebook or Instagram listing at Langstonofficially.

In all, I’d have to say the hype is fairly well deserved. Plus, we do love new. Bring your favorite date and a lot of money.  (Although in fairness, I’d have to say maybe just 20% more than you’d spend in one of our other steakhouses, all of which seem crazy expensive to me here in Cowtown USA.)  But this one is Chiefs' territory as well as expense account terrain.

Alas, you probably won’t see Patrick or Travis.
