The other night, friends Kay and Bill (both lawyers but still friends) invited us to a fundraiser for Legal Aid of Western Missouri. This is a good organization and we were happy to go to their second annual Smarty Party, although it turns out we (not just Cute and I but our entire team) did not exactly win this trivia contest.
But nonetheless, we won some kind of prize for coming in . . . LAST. I know, I know that blows the suspense.
At our table, everyone but Cute and I had left our entertaining if apparently not so brilliant table. And having stepped out as I prepared to leave, I heard our name called and raced back in. But they’d given our prize to another greedy team! Valiantly, if I say so myself, I wrestled two away from them. (Well, that may not be exactly the way it happened.) Everyone wanted our cool prize, which you can see in the last slide – it also served as a painful and sour reminder.
I appreciate Legal Aid because they help people who cannot afford a lawyer to fight for justice. Their tag line is they provide free civil legal assistance to “the people who need it most and can afford it least.” They handle all kinds of cases, including healthcare, housing, domestic violence, consumer, immigration, economic development and much more. They have five offices in Western Missouri and serve 40 counties. They are funded by a variety of sources, including the party-goers this evening who were invited to dress in their favorite era.
There were lots of flower children around. Every team had a chosen name – my favs were Les Quizerables and the one in the slides. There were two MCs and the questions were hard, especially as we were required to deposit phones in the center of our tables.
It was a fun night for a worthy cause. If you don’t know anything about this organization, go to https://lawmo.org/about-us/ and you’ll see what a valuable service it provides. Maybe give it some money. Get a table together for next year. Or just help spread the word about these people who are making our world more fair and just. We didn’t even mind losing so much because we knew Legal Aid recipients were winning.
(But the winning team was really good. I have my suspicions.) 😊
P.S. Be sure to look for me in one of the photos below. There's (not) a prize if you see me.
