Yoli and YOLO

TheBetterHalf

We know you think that life is all glamor, excitement, and marvelous experiences for The Cutest Couple Ever. Well, we'd like you to think that. Today, however, we must admit that occasionally we just want to sit back, maybe eat, watch a movie on TV. Cutest is currently on a no cooking binge (which by the way, has lasted for about the last five years). As close as she likes to come is to find something that's pretty good and then casually imply she made it. Or as she eventually puts it, she made it happen.

But this weekend we were determined to just veg out Saturday night. Less than a year old (she estimated) in her freezer was a fajita insides combo and all we needed were tortillas.

She wanted really good tortillas, James Beard worthy tortillas, so off we went to Yoli Tortilleria at 16th and Jefferson. Tucked into a mostly residential but eclectic area on the west side, Yoli’s is a great example of what dedicated entrepreneurs can do.

Marissa Gencarelli (a member of Les Dames d’ Escoffier, the premier international women’s culinary organization with a KC chapter) and husband Mark have built a bustling enterprise from their one store to supplying over 100 restaurants plus many stores with all kinds of tortillas and masa and salsas. AND the James Beard Best Bakery in America award. Amazing!

It made me think that sometimes, it’s the wrapping that matters. The so-called small stuff. Think about that this Thanksgiving – whether it’s food, friends, a happy vibe, a fleeting moment.

Me, I noticed that Yoli, Mark’s grandmother’s name, is awfully close to YOLO (Yeah, you know: You Only Live Once).
