Not Quite Wining, Really Not Whining, and Dining in Power and Light

TheBetterHalf

This weekend Cute and I jumped on the “free” (maybe to you; I pay around $700/year since I’m fortunate to live in the transportation development district) streetcar and wandered around the Power and Light District for the Wicked Wine Walk.

Some people wore costumes; some wore glittery outfits; some I thought were In costume but maybe they weren’t; some apparently didn’t own home mirrors; I wore a raincoat which was pretty necessary on Saturday.

For $40 GA, you got a very tiny wine glass which went along with the tiny pours of not great wine and very small apps. BUT, I'm not complaining. Truly.

It wasn't hugely overcrowded (thank you, weather czar) and there was only one place where the line was so long we just gave up. That was Sinkers Lounge which apparently has nine mini golf holes, nine table top games and cocktails. Another night, maybe.

Call-out especially to Johnnie’s Jazz Bar and Grill (top picture is from their website) who did the best (I guess by that you’ll not be surprised to know I mean most generous) pour and whose simple app – pretzel pieces and sausage – was the most filling. We've been to Johnnie's for drinks and jazz and it's always pleasant.

Another shout to No Other Pub at which we ended up getting our additional full-size (4 oz to the brim) free pour. No Other Pub (by Sporting KC) was a surprise to us. We’re not that often at the Power and Light District so we didn’t know that this place has lots of games from shuffle-board to pool to bowling – nine in all. [By the way, what IS snookball*, when available at $25/hour?]

When you go there, you better play something as they charge an additional 3% facilities fee to your check – which I didn’t notice of course. Just so you know. But the place is big, spacious, loud but not too, and fun.

My takeaway that afternoon: probably won’t do it again, but it was different, people were all cordial, and we spent an enjoyable if misty day. Then we ducked into the Bristol for their great chowder, and yes, a real wine glass full of good wine. So I figure it’s good to try atypical -- and Cute is always willing.

P.S. *I discover that Snookball “is a game that combines soccer and billiards. The rules are similar to traditional pool, but players use their feet and soccer balls instead of pool balls and a cue stick.” No one was playing while we were there, alas. But here’s a different video so you can see it: https://youtu.be/KSj0VzX61rs.
